Here it is, 2020 by the numbers. Strangely close to 2019’s numbers with 20 more active days and about 110 more miles while spending about 6 less hours doing it. I’m not really sure what all this means except that I ride bikes a lot. More than some people and not as much as others. However, I really enjoy looking over the numbers and confirm or deny what I think is going on.
I am pretty proud of the fact that I got really close to my goal of 260 days (active which is about 5 days a week on average) in a year that had so many twists and turns. I also did that without much planning or paying attention so it was mostly just what I felt was right. So that was pretty exciting.
It was also pretty interesting to me that my average ride was about 18 miles and 1.6 hours long. This honestly seems a little long knowing that so may of the rides were around an hour or less. With that said most rides were at least 45-50 minutes. So this seems reasonable. The breakdown of rides changed a little bit it looks like. I had a few more rides in the 20-30 mile range, which might explain having a few more miles with less time. I think this probably has to do with the fact that I spent a lot of time riding my new Epic (with gears). I also started making more trips over to DuPont, riding there of course, which has about 18 miles of pavement round trip.
It was pretty cool to see the distribution of rides between the bikes I own. It kind of proves I’m a pretty equal opportunity bike rider. The lower numbers were either bought or sold near one of the ends of the year so they’re skewed for good reason. Then the Gold Verhauen, that bike still has the most miles on it of any bike I own but the others are catching up. It’s been in the stable the longest and most likely will keep doing what it does, which is anything I ask. At this point it’s not particularly great at anything but pretty Ok at everything.
Honestly, I think these numbers are about as much as I’m interested in for a little while. Well at least while my kids are growing up. The kids are at such a fun age right now it’s really hard to miss too much. This is a big reason why so many of my rides start so early. That way I get to be around pretty much all day long.
The only thing that was a little disappointing is that the number of more than 50 mile rides looks to be down a good bit from 2019, I really enjoy those big days and hope I can find a way to bring a few of them back in 2021.
It would be hard to look at this without mentioning Katie for being (mostly) supportive of this passion of mine. Even though I ride early most of the time it’s still a lot of time out riding bikes and doing “me”. She’s a big part of what makes any of this possible. Finally, it’s hard to leave out the fine folks at Sycamore Cycles. You can’t really ride bikes that long around here without taking care of your equipment and those guys just get it. Odds are there is someone on staff there who has decent experience in whatever cycling discipline you’re looking for.
